It’s the most controversial holiday of the year but love it or hate it Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Personally I’m not one for a fancy meal and tacky teddy so have been racking my brains for a slightly different way to mark the occasion with my significant other. Whether you’re spending it with your other half, your best friend or you’re getting your pals together for an ‘anti-valentine’s day’ celebration these alternative date ideas should give you some inspiration to celebrate the day of love in style…
Ghetto Golf has ended up as the winner for my Valentine’s Day and we’re off to play golf, eat hotdogs and drink cocktails (what more could you want?!) Mini golf for cool kids- well adults, it’s for over 18’s only, this place is a neon jungle covered in graffiti, lights and alternative holes. Ghetto Golf also showcase Frank’s hotdogs who claim to make the best gluten free hotdogs in town. With resident DJ’s providing the beats as you make your way around the 18 holes any existing ideas of mini golf that you’ve got will be long gone before you’ve even hit the ball.

If you’re looking for a ‘day date’ idea then afternoon tea could be the answer. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is all fine china and cucumber sandwiches though. The Afternoon Punk Tea at the Baltic Social is more dirty than delicate. Chicken wings, salt and pepper fries, oreo brownies all washed down with teapots of cocktails this is afternoon tea done right. There’s also a veggie version so you’ve got no excuse not to take your date for a plate….or two.
Not just for Halloween, the Shiverpool ghost walks are the ideal date all year round. You can choose from 2 separate walking tours (as well as a bus tour) to explore the city and learn the tales from years gone by. Accompanied by 2 actors (or are they??) you’ll get taken on a tour of some of Liverpool’s most iconic streets. You may not find yourself struggling to sleep through fear but this is a guaranteed evening of entertainment and fun. It’s also your last chance to enter the hidden vaults beneath Castle Street at the end of the Auld City Shivers tour as their doors will close for good in March.Book your Shiverpool tickets here.
Enjoy a hidden bar
If you’re looking for a slightly more intimate date for you and your loved one then why not try one of Liverpool’s various ‘hidden bars.’ Some of the cities best kept secrets lay in wait behind unassuming doors and stairwells. If you’re a cocktail connoisseur then head to either Jenny’s or Berry and Rye (if you can find them 😉 ) for that old-school speakeasy vibe. If you’re feeling slightly more adventurous then why not give SomePlace a try? Located behind the swinging green light on Seel Street this place offers every absinthe concoction you can think of. Not for the faint hearted this is the ultimate cosy destination just don’t be fooled into thinking you can handle an ‘expert’ level drink, chances are you can’t!
There are loads of options for Valentines Day date ideas, how are you celebrating?
