How to Celebrate Christmas in Liverpool

If I could have gotten away with it I would have probably written this post in June but I held off for a slightly more appropriate time. In case you hadn’t yet gathered, I LOVE Christmas. It seems about 5 minutes ago that we were eating all the mince pies and blasting Michael Buble every hour of the day but hey, I sure as hell ain’t complaining that it’s time to do that allll over again. If you’re spending any time in Liverpool this December then look no further than my guide to celebrating the run up to the big day in the ‘pool.

Christmas Markets Admittedly Liverpool’s offering may not live up to it’s neighbours Manchester but cut them some slack, Manchester’s population is 4X that of Liverpool’s (I think!) For the second year running the German huts are outside St George’s Hall and this year they’re bigger and better than before. With everything from mulled wine to yorkshire pudding wraps (!!) they may be a smaller scale but they’re still the perfect way to kick start the festive season.

Liverpool Ice Festival  In case the northern weather wasn’t quite enough, you can go and get your cold fix at the Ice Festival down at the Pier Head. With an ice skating rink, ice slide, ice bar, alpine bar, ferris wheel and enough fairground rides to give Blackpool a run for their money there’s something for everyone. Although I prefer to keep my feet firmly on the ground the ice bar is super fun and this may well be the year I finally try my hand at ice skating. Maybe…

Home Alone Bar Home Alone and Home Alone 2 alternate as ya gals favourite Christmas film and there ain’t no one who holds a place in my heart quite like Kevin McCallister. When I heard there was a Home Alone themed bar opening in Cains Brewery this December I couldn’t quite contain my excitement. Full of Christmas living rooms, live bands and ‘every decoration possible, there’s a strong chance I’ll be spending 95% of my December here. For more info and tickets head here.

Miracle on Seel Street If Home Alone is taking the top spot then Miracle on 34th Street isn’t far behind. Graffiti Spirits Group who are behind some of Liverpool’s favourite independent bars such as Santa Chupitos and Salt Dog Slim’s are turning the upstairs of 81LTD on Seel Street into the ultimate Christmas grotto. Tickets are £10 and will get you 2 hours in the grotto, a drink, a mince pie and a goody bag to take home. Cocktail lovers will have the chance to sip a festive cocktail whilst surrounded by snow globes, christmas trees and the ultimate festive soundtrack.

Catch a Festive Film If you’re anything like me then a massive part of my December is spent watching Christmas films. I always watch the same ones I snuggled up to watch when I was a kid and they bring back allll the memories. Some of Liverpool’s best landmarks are putting on festive films for all the family this December. You can catch Love Actually in concert at the Philharmonic, The Snowman is on at the Anglican Cathedral and Harry Potter in concert is coming to the Echo Arena. Last year I went to watch Home Alone 2 in Sefton Park Palm House and it was by far my Christmas highlight.

See a Panto Nothing screams Christmas like a bit of ‘he’s behind you’ action and Liverpool has plenty of panto’s on offer throughout the festive season to keep you entertained. Oh yes they do. You can catch Aladdin, Cinderella and Peter Pan across Merseyside this December.

Grab a Cosy Drink When all that Christmas shopping gets a little too much, settling down with a cosy drink is the perfect solution. If you’re after a cocktail by candlelight then Furnivals Well is my top choice and just a stone’s throw from Liverpool ONE. If it’s a hot chocolate you’d rather be sipping then try Rococo, the ultimate hidden gem on Lord Street.

The Coca Cola Truck The famous red truck has divided opinion this year with some saying it’s breeding an obesity epidemic and others hailing it a Christmas tradition. No matter what your thoughts on it you can’t deny that your first glimpse of the famed ‘Holidays are Coming’ advert marks the start of the festive season. You can catch it in Liverpool on 5th and 6th December.

This is just a teeny tiny snippet of what’s on offer this Christmas across Liverpool. What events have caught your eye this year?

(Shout out to Nicola for letting a gal steal some of her pics)
